Escaping with Mom on Mother’s Day

Every mom is different.  Some just want to sit back and relax, while others may want to go for a hike or even try bungee jumping. (Not that I want to go bungee jumping, thank you!)

I truly enjoy being honored on this special day.  The best part is being together with family.  It doesn’t really matter what we do.  Breakfast in bed, brunches and picnics are fun.  Or you could treat me to dinner and a movie, a spa day or a shopping spree.  You could even sign me up for a class of like cooking or flower arranging.  Personally, of my favorite gifts is someone cleaning the house until it sparkles. (Hint, hint.) There so are many ideas to choose from.  The important thing is that moms should not have to lift a finger on this holiday. Oh, and don’t forget the card!  Or better yet send her a handwritten letter.

A not-so-typical Mother’s Day activity I have come to enjoy is playing an Escape Room with friends and family. We have played several, and always have a blast working as a team and trying to escape. My sons and I actually own and operate Red Lantern Escape Rooms in Brea.  I love to see multigenerational groups come to play—grandma and grandpa, adult children, and grandkids.  Working to escape is a great bonding experience where everyone’s talents get highlighted.  Family members laugh and cheer and create lasting memories together.

Fun fact: Anna Jarvis is credited with celebrating the first Mother’s Day at a service of worship at Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton West Virginia.  She advocated for the holiday and finally, in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.
